As fitness professionals we have been told for some time now that our industry is going to be changing to cater to 'baby boomers' - an older generation of exercisers who have the resources to become gym members but will have different needs to our current membership.
A study by Janet Viljoen in conjunction with Rhodes University recently looked at an aspect of this - focusing on older women as a segment and wanting to know the best way to encourage them to exercise as swell as the best way to ensure that they continue doing so.
Overall it discovered that the place of exercise coupled with the relationships they built with the trainer and the other participants we the main contributors to their on-going successful participation.
